Oh my, oh my, 2016?! That’s hard to believe, huh? I don’t
know about you, but for me, 2015 flew by! As great as 2015 was, I can’t wait to
see what this New Year holds. Rather than resolutions, I have compiled a
general list of reminders that, in my opinion, are applicable to everyone. So without further rambling and in honor of
2016’s arrival, here are 8 New Year reminders:
1.
Avoid
small talk. Embrace deeper conversation. Give your words meaning. Truly get
to know people. Rather than the general name, city, state, delve into who they
are and the opinions that they have and the things that they are passionate
about. Plus, everyone hates small talk anyways.
2.
Take
chances. Ask questions. Make mistakes. Learn from the mistakes and do
better. When presented with opportunity, say yes. They say that you regret
most, the chances that you didn’t take. So don’t have regret and seize the
occasion thrown your way.

3.
Be
honest. Be passionate. Have opinions. That’ll scare the world. Do that. In
today’s day and age it’s easy for many to get sucked in to believing that they
have to think a certain way or have the same opinion as everyone else. Don’t be
swayed. One of my favorite quotes is: “If you stand for nothing, you will fall
for anything.” Personally, I am very opinionated because I know what I stand
for. What do you believe in? What are you passionate about? What makes your
eyes light up when you talk about it? Talk about it.

4.
Learn.
Read. Know things. Knowledge really is power after all. The more you know the
better. Especially if you have a lot of opinions like I do…be able to back
those up. So read a book. Know what’s going on in the world. Stay up to date with
the news. You don’t have to love politics or watching the news to have
knowledge of what is happening outside of your personal life. Educate yourself
in all areas of life. Pick a subject and learn more about it.

5.
Run.
Sweat. Take a hike. Eat carrots over French fries? (UGH idk.) Be good to
yourself. Set out time in your day for the gym. Or get some fresh air. Go for a
walk. Throw a football. Put down the phone and close the laptop. You’ll always
thank yourself for it.

6.
Be silly,
be witty, and laugh a lot. This is an easy one for myself. I’m always
throwing in a sarcastic comment. Plus I’m a complete goofball. I think that
laughter should be so common in everyone’s everyday life. I love humor and the
joy that comes from being not so serious. So much of our lives are based around
being professional and serious especially as you get older but don’t ever
underestimate the power of laughing until your stomach hurts (my favorite).

7.
Grow.
Improve. Never settle. Set goals and have ambitions—both short term and long
term. Strive to do better in all areas of life.

8.
Worry
less. Pray more. Don’t get too caught up in the future or the what-ifs.
Plan for it but be present and appreciative of the moment that you’re in right
now.
